(June 18, 2025) — Connecticut is home to a bounty of beautiful and unique gardens, many of them an integral part of historic landmarks dotted throughout the state. Connecticut’s Historic Gardens, a group of sixteen distinctive historic sites and gardens within the state’s borders, hosts its annual Connecticut Historic Gardens Day on Sunday, June 22, 2025 inviting visitors to experience the timeless beauty and rich histories of places that have delighted and inspired patrons for a century or more.
At the Thankful Arnold House Museum, at 14 Hayden Hill Road in Haddam from 12:00 Noon to 4:00 p.m., visitors will learn how herbs, vegetables and plants were used by the Widow Thankful Arnold in the early 19th century. The garden features more than fifty varieties of herbs, including those used in cooking, dyeing, fragrance and medicine. This year’s activity for both adults and children will be making a wreath craft and garden scavenger hunt.
Kristy Benson-Amarante of Higganum’s Bittersweet Farm will be on hand to talk about herbal and medicinal teas, and Bethany Naccarato, author of the museum’s garden book, will be featured to sign books and talk about her experience as a master gardener.
Light refreshments also will be served, including our famous rhubarb tea. For further information visit haddamhistory.org or call 860-345-2400. Free admission to both the house and garden.
