Brewed Awakening, owned and operated by the passionate and indomitable Bernadette Markey, is joyfully celebrating its 15th anniversary on October 5, 2026. Nestled along Route 81, right next to Higganum Hairstyling and Barber Shop, this beloved establishment has become more than just a coffee shop; it’s the “Cheers” of Higganum, a warm space where everyone knows your name.
From the moment you step inside Brewed Awakening, you’re greeted with the cheerful smiles of Bernadette and her part-time employee, Jodi. This welcoming atmosphere has cultivated a loyal customer base, especially among local workers and retirees who gather to share stories over breakfast and lunch. The menu, which began with modest offerings, has expanded over the years, showcasing everything from breakfast sandwiches and fluffy pancakes to hearty deli sandwiches and the famous Friday meatball grinders. Beyond the exceptional food and beverages including the fresh-squeezed juices and the local favorite, Vermont Maple coffee, Brewed Awakening has earned its title through its community spirit.
Bernadette’s journey to entrepreneurship was born from a young dream sparked during her early experiences working in various food establishments. Despite the loss of her mother, who would have beamed with pride at her daughter’s achievement, Bernadette carries that passion forward, recognizing that her success is intertwined with her mother’s aspirations. This emotional connection drives her to create a welcoming space where every patron feels like family.

Bernadette’s commitment to giving back shines through her continuous support for local churches and community events, including the annual Burr Pond Fishing Tournament.
