HKHS Student Completes Connecticut Fire Academy Course

By Olivia Drake, HVFC Public Information Officer
(August 22, 2024) — Congratulations to Haddam Volunteer Fire Company Junior Division member and Haddam-Killingworth High School student Will Stolen! Will recently completed the Connecticut Fire Academy’s Introduction to the Fire Service (ITTFS) Advanced Skills and Concepts (ASAC) session held from August 11, 2024 to August 17, 2024
Will was among twenty-four students to attend. These students develop their own Command Staff and attend a series of lectures and practical skills stations on advanced material including high angle rescue, vehicle extrication, self-contained breathing apparatus, fireground rehabilitation, standpipe and master stream operations, and pump operator training.
Will participated in leadership, radio communications, and instructional methodology training sessions and collaborated on developing a company-level drill.
At graduation, held on August 17, 2024, the class demonstrated the skills they learned by mitigating a challenging simulated building fire and vehicle extrication.
Haddam Volunteer Fire Company currently has openings for Junior Division members (14 to 17 years old). This is an excellent opportunity for high school students, like Will, to give back to their community, develop skills, and consider becoming a volunteer firefighter. All training and gear are provided.
