Legislative Candidate Qualifies for Citizen Election Program Grant

Submitted by Kathryn Russell

(June 5, 2024) — Kathryn Russell, Republican candidate for the 36th House District seat, has announced that her campaign has reached fundraising thresholds required under the State of Connecticut’s clean elections program.

“The level of encouragement I’ve received so far is amazing,” said Russell, working to represent the residents of Chester, Deep River, Essex and Haddam. “Over and over, people have said that now, more than ever, they need a strong voice and an active listener who will use financial common sense in developing and evaluating legislation designed to help our town residents and businesses thrive. I’m truly humbled that so many people want me to take on that role.”

Russell, a Deep River resident and Selectwoman, intends to apply for a financial grant from the state’s Citizens Election Program. Qualifying for a grant is no easy task—Russell worked to raise $5,800 and collect contributions from 150 people who live anywhere in the four towns included in the 36th District.

Russell accomplished her fundraising goals just fifteen days after filing her candidacy paperwork with State Elections Enforcement Commission officials. Russell launched her campaign shortly after Chris Turkington of Haddam announced that he would not run for the position in this election cycle.

Gigi Simko, Chair of the Haddam Republican Town Committee, supports Russell’s efforts to represent residents of the 36th House District.  “Kathryn’s swift and successful fundraising campaign demonstrates her appeal as a candidate. The HRTC looks forward to supporting her in the bid for State Assembly,” Simko said.

Russell received the party endorsement at the May 16, 2024 convention at the Haddam firehouse community hall, where Republican delegates from all four communities chose the party nominee.
