I want to begin by thanking Haddam residents for the trust you’ve placed in me over the past six years. Serving on the Board of Finance has been an honor and a responsibility I’ve taken seriously. I’m not a politician, just a concerned citizen doing my part to serve the community I care deeply about.  I’ve always believed that national and state politics shouldn’t dictate how we manage our town. My focus has been and will always be on what’s best for Haddam.

As we approach this election, there are several qualified individuals running for the Board of Finance. I applaud each of them for stepping up. Public service isn’t always easy and it takes courage to raise your hand and get involved. We need more of that spirit and more neighbors willing to serve on boards, commissions, and civic groups. If you’re considering getting involved, I promise you’ll gain more than you give.

That said, I am seeking re-election because I believe I’m the right person for the job. I’ve demonstrated a willingness to make tough decisions, ask hard questions, and stand up for what I believe is right, even when I’m the only one doing so. A few highlights:

·        In 2020, I was the sole member of the Board of Finance to vote against a budget increase. At the height of the COVID crisis, when so many were struggling financially, I believed it was wrong to ask more from taxpayers.

·        I successfully advocated for increased funding for road maintenance, something that had been neglected for too long. We’re now playing catch-up, and I’m proud to have pushed that issue forward.

·        With over 75% of our tax dollars going to the regional school district, I make it a priority to attend all joint sessions with the Board of Education. I ask tough questions.  One area is transportation costs, which are rising faster than most other expenses. It’s not acceptable to see nearly empty buses driving around while taxpayers foot the bill. We need smarter solutions.

·        Experience matters. Of the ten Board of Finance members, I currently have the third-longest tenure. Over the past four years, we’ve seen a lot of turnover. While fresh perspectives are vital, so is continuity, especially during uncertain times with funding challenges coming from Hartford and Washington.

I’m proud of what I’ve contributed, but there’s more work to do. I’d be honored to continue serving you on the Board of Finance.

Early voting is open now through election day, November 4th. I encourage you to vote, to have your voice heard, and to consider all the strong candidates on the ballot. I hope to earn your vote for another term. Thank you.

Marc Adelberg, Haddam
