Submitted by Candlewood Farm Arts Foundation

(March 14, 2025) — On April 11, 2025 at 7:00 p.m., the United Congregational Church of Haddam and Higganum will host New York City–based Exponential Ensemble in a program of chamber music for woodwinds. The concert is sponsored by Candlewood Farm Arts Foundation in Higganum and is free and open to the public.

Musical selections will feature some of the greatest works for woodwinds by French and American composers such as Valerie Coleman, Jean Françaix as well as a new work by Brad Balliett, a New York–based composer and birder inspired by the birdsong of Central Park.

The program will showcase Exponential Ensemble woodwind players Anna Urrey (flute), Kemp Jernigan (oboe), Pascal Archer (clarinet) and Joshua Butcher (bassoon). (photo above). Doors open at 6:30 p.m.

Founded in 2011 by clarinetist Pascal Archer, Exponential Ensemble is a New York City–based mixed chamber music ensemble. Comprised of premiere performers and teaching artists, Exponential Ensemble’s mission includes commissioning and premiering works by living composers inspired by math, science and literacy.

The Ensemble also curates interactive educational programs using music as a way to connect with school curricula and delivers this programming to organizations such as Music for Autism, the Bethel Woods Center for the Arts, and New York City public schools. In 2024, Exponential Ensemble premiered its debut album, Matters of Time, which features four commissioned works inspired by science.

Established in 2008, Candlewood Farm Arts Foundation is a registered 501(c)3 with a mission to foster appreciation of live chamber music and support the study and preservation of early Connecticut vernacular architecture, especially barns.
