(June 11, 2025) — As the school year comes to a close, families across Haddam and Killingworth are preparing for a new routine. Summer brings freedom, fun and relaxation—but it also brings new risks, particularly for youth. Without the structure of the school day, teens often face more unsupervised time, peer pressure and boredom—all of which can increase the likelihood of substance use.
At Haddam-Killingworth Youth and Family Services, prevention is at the core of everything we do. This summer, we’re encouraging families to be proactive, stay connected, and take intentional steps to support their teens’ mental health and substance-free choices.
Start the Conversation Early—and Keep It Going
Prevention starts at home. Research shows that youth whose parents talk to them regularly about the dangers of alcohol, marijuana, and other drugs are significantly less likely to use them. Start age-appropriate conversations early, and don’t worry about being perfect—what matters most is being open, honest and available.
Set Clear Rules and Expectations
Data from 2023 local data shows that nearly 25% of students report not having clear family rules about alcohol use, and 16% say the same about marijuana or THC. Setting expectations can make a real difference. Consider creating a family agreement outlining curfews, substance use rules, and consequences—then revisit it regularly as a team.
Protect Mental Health Through Structure and Support
While summer is a welcome break from academic stress, it can also leave some teens feeling isolated or anxious. Help them maintain a healthy routine with consistent sleep, regular meals, physical activity, and time outdoors. Stay tuned in to emotional changes, and remind them that it’s okay to ask for help. HKYFS offers confidential, local support for both teens and families.
Channel Energy into Positive Activities
Teens who are bored or disconnected are more likely to engage in risky behavior. That’s why we’re offering Teen Trailblazers, a weekly program packed with fun, friends, and outdoor adventures across Connecticut!
Build Purpose Through Service
Giving back isn’t just good for the community—it’s great for teens, too. Volunteering boosts mental health, strengthens social bonds, and gives young people a sense of purpose. This summer, join us for Community Service Days, where teens can earn volunteer hours while making a real difference right here in our towns.
Be Part of the Prevention Movement
At HKYFS, we believe that prevention is most powerful when the whole community is involved. Whether you’re a parent, coach, business owner or neighbor, your influence matters.
Spots are limited for Teen Trailblazers and Community Service Days—don’t wait to get involved. To register or learn more, visit www.hkyfs.org.
Let’s work together to make this a safe, meaningful, and substance-free summer for every young person in our community.
