“Taste of Haddam” Hits It Out of the Park for Brainerd Library

(October 2, 2023) — The “Taste of Haddam” event on September 23, 2023 at Brainerd Memorial Library in Haddam attracted more than a hundred local residents and raised more than $12,000, which will help fund library programs for people of all ages.

By far the biggest and best “Taste,” this year’s event attracted some twenty-five restaurants, caterers and beer and wine purveyors who donated food and drink and contributed to the festive atmosphere.

“Thanks to all the wonderful volunteers who invited restaurants to participate, along with the sponsors who donated money and services for the silent auction and raffle,” said Robbie Marshall, BML Assistant Director.

Many of the contributions came from beyond Haddam’s borders, she noted. Some auction examples include a weekend retreat on the shoreline, original artwork, and a tour boat out of Brooklyn, New York with a night at a Hilton hotel.  Raffle items ranged from gift baskets to ice cream and restaurant certificates, to a dog grooming session and single malt whiskey.

Haddam’s library is funded by the town’s budget, government grants and contributions from area residents. Taste of Haddam is the largest single fundraiser of the year for operating expenses, as distinguished from funds used for the ongoing renovation.

Upcoming library events and activities range from an evening of local ghost stories to pumpkin carving, a book club and a local candidates reception, to name only a few. Residents are urged to visit the library website to see all that today’s Brainerd offers.

“It ain’t your Grandma’s library,” said Donna Brinckerhoff, an event organizer.
