The Enduring Legacy of The Leatherman, Wednesday, April 17, 2024, 7:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m. Of all the legendary figures who have come through Connecticut, few have had the staying power or notoriety that The Leatherman has achieved. For six years during the late 1800s, this so-called “hobo” hiked the same, 360-mile, circuitous route every thirty-four days, like clockwork. Residents could predict when he would return to their town. Wearing a self-made suit of leather, from head to toe, he conversed with no one and slept in caves – and we still don’t know who he was. But, people loved him. Hear his story at this presentation by Mike Allen, host and producer of the podcast, Amazing Tales from Off and On Connecticut’s Beaten Path. Please register in advance, to reserve your space.
Stuffed Animal Sleepover, Thursday, April 18, 2024, 6:00 p.m.-6:30 p.m. Ever wonder what stuffed animals do after bedtime? Join us with your comfy PJs and stuffed animal friend for a special story time with Mrs. Fig! After the story, tuck in your friend for a sleepover at the library. Pick up your stuffed animal the following day (April 19, 2024 between 3:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m.), and see what mischief they’ve been up to! (Staff will be on the lookout for silly behavior, and will take photos.) Please register in advance, so we know how many friends to expect.
Repair Café, Saturday, April 20, 2024, 9:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. Killingworth Library will again hold a free Repair Café as part of the Killingworth Women’s Organization town-wide Earth Day celebration. The library will have “fixers” on hand to help repair and extend the life of bikes, clothing, computers, lamps, small appliances, small furniture, and toys. Sharpening of knives, scissors, and tools will be available as well. In 2019, repair cafes worldwide saved 463 tons of waste and prevented the emission of 11,000 tons of carbon dioxide. Repair cafes bring the community together, make our lives more sustainable, and save on disposal costs. Drop-in event.
“Death in the Details” Author Talk, Wednesday, April 24, 2024, 6:00 p.m.-7:00 p.m. Local author Katie Tietjen will be speaking about the release of her debut novel, “Death in the Details.” The talk will include a presentation, a brief reading, and time for questions. Books will be available for purchase and signing. Space is limited, so please register in advance.
Seed Library
Killingworth Library now offers seeds – spring and summer vegetables, herbs, and flowers. Visit the display and please take only what you need to start your garden (envelopes are available). The current seed selection was provided by the Chas. C. Hart Seed Company, the Seed Savers Exchange of Herman’s Garden Seed Donation Program, and High Mowing Organic Seeds. The library will eventually accept donations of seeds as well, to keep the program running.
