HVFC Responds: Two-Car Accident on Route 82 Connector

By Olivia Drake, HVFC Public Information Officer

At 11:10 p.m. on June 18, 2022, Haddam Volunteer Fire Company was dispatched to the Route 82 Connector in Haddam for a reported two-car motor vehicle accident with entrapment.

A vehicle traveling eastbound on the Connector crossed over into the westbound lane and struck another vehicle head-on. The east-bound driver was able to self-extricate, was evaluated on scene, and was transported to Hartford Hospital via Haddam Ambulance.

The operator of the westbound vehicle reported that his leg was pinned under the dash. Firefighters used Hurst tools to remove the driver’s side door before extricating the patient. The patient was transported to Yale Medical Center via East Haddam Ambulance.

Due to the severity of the accident and extensive debris on the roadway, all lanes of the 82 Connector were closed during the incident and traffic was rerouted back to Route 9. Crews applied absorbent materials to contain leaked fluids and worked to clean the scene for more than an hour after the incident.

This accident occurred in the same area as a fatal accident on May 6. This was the sixth MVA in Haddam so far this month. Connecticut State Police are investigating.
