HVFC Participates in Extrication Drill

By Olivia Drake, HVFC Public Information Officer

(November 12, 2024) — If patients are trapped inside a vehicle following a motor vehicle accident, firefighters may need to stabilize the vehicle before starting an extrication.

On November 11, 2024, members of the Haddam Volunteer Fire Company participated in a vehicle stabilization and extrication drill at Station 3. Firefighters used cribbing, rescue struts, chains and straps to secure two vehicles.

Once the vehicles were stabilized, members took turns using several tools, from saws and axes to battery-powered Hurst tools, to remove windshields and doors.

The exercise allowed senior members to freshen their skills while newer and Junior Division members learned alongside officers.
