HVFC Responds to Propane Leak on Saybrook Road

By Olivia Drake, HVFC Public Information Officer
(August 3, 2024) — At 3:15 p.m. on August 2, 2024 Haddam Volunteer Fire Company responded to a residence on Saybrook Road in Haddam for a reported propane leak in a 1,000 gallon underground tank. En route, fire officers requested mutual aid assistance from Guilford Fire Department’s Hazmat Team.
For crews to repair the leak, about 300 gallons of propane needed to be removed from the tank. Firefighters use a technique known as “flaring” to burn propane vapor and pressurized liquid through two propane flare stacks.
This prevents gas from spilling onto the ground, harming the environment, or causing injury to the homeowners or their property.
The flaring process took about four hours and the tank is now deemed safe for the gas company to repair.
