HKHS Student Selected for National Journalism Conference

Submitted by Barth Keck

(February 27, 2023) — Samantha Pach, a junior at Haddam-Killingworth High School, has been selected to represent the HK region as a National Youth Correspondent at the 2023 Washington Journalism and Media Conference to be held at George Mason University from July 9 – 14, 2023.

Pach joins a select group of students from all over the country for an intensive study of journalism and media. The 11th grader from Haddam is a reporter for The Cougar Chronicle, the high school’s student newspaper. She was chosen based on academic accomplishments and her strong interest in journalism and media studies.

“I’ve always been interested in journalism and I felt this seminar could further my knowledge in the field,” said Pach. “Plus, I believe it could help me become a better writer.”

National Youth Correspondents participate in hands-on, experiential learning through decision-making simulations that challenge them to solve problems and explore the creative, practical, and ethical tensions inherent in journalism and media, according to organizers for the event.

Presenters will include prominent journalists, CEOs of major media outlets, researchers, and recent college graduates successfully entering the field. With distinguished faculty, guest speakers, and direct access to elite D.C. practitioners, the weeklong Washington Journalism and Media Conference offers aspiring journalists a unique experience.
