HKHS: September 2018 Update

By Donna Hayward, HKHS Principal.

At Haddam Killingworth High School, we have enjoyed a fantastic start to the school year and are looking forward to a year full of growth and celebration. On the very first day of school, HKHS was featured in News Channel 8’s “What’s Right with Schools” segment. We hope you caught the broadcast – you may access it through this link if you missed it.

Our team is always working to build and maintain strong connections with our families in order to best support our students. Thank you to everyone who was able to attend our annual Open House on Thursday, September 20, 2018. Parents and guardians had the opportunity to follow in the footsteps of their son or daughter, visiting each of their classes, hearing about daily routines and topics of study and getting a glimpse of the student’s experience.

I am pleased to introduce our new teachers who have joined our team this fall. We extend a warm welcome to the following professionals:

  • Ryan Fraser (Special Education): Ryan grew up and currently resides in Guilford. He attended Guilford High School and graduated from the University of Connecticut with a Masters Degree in Special Education. During college, Ryan student taught at Batchelder School in Hartford and at Windsor High School. Throughout his time in high school and college, Ryan played many different sports, including baseball, basketball, and hockey. In addition to teaching, he works as a Day Camp Counselor at Camp Hazen YMCA in Chester, CT. In his free time, Ryan enjoys playing and watching sports and spending time with family and friends. He is very excited to join the HKHS community and help out with many different sports and clubs.
  • Kate Mayer (P.E./Health): Kate resides in Old Saybrook. She graduated with her BSED in PE & Health from CCSU and received her Masters in School Health Education from WVU. She has a strong passion for physical activity and living a healthy lifestyle. After teaching Health at an inner city middle school the past three years and coaching high school softball for the past ten, Kate’s excited to join the fantastic PE & Health Department at HK and build solid relationships with future colleagues, students and student athletes! Outside of the classroom, you can find her spending quality time with friends and family, coaching, attending country concerts, walking her pup on the beach and enjoying outdoor activities — especially golf, softball, kayaking and bocce.
  • Rachel Pac (Guidance): Rachel was raised in Newington where she currently resides. She received her Bachelors from CCSU in Psychology and Criminology and her Masters in School Counseling from the University of Saint Joseph. In her free time, she enjoys mountain biking, baking, and spending time with her two cats. Rachel is excited to become a part of the HKHS team!

Music Production

Mrs. Webster’s C Period Music Production Class has created audio short stories complete with music, sound effects, and recorded narration. Students utilized the musical production software, Audacity, to complete their projects. This assignment is a great way to start off the year because it gives students a completed piece of work that they can “use” and also builds skills that can be implemented in other classes for projects such as podcasts, AP Language assessments, and webpage audio files. The stories will be collected as an electronic bundle and a copy will be presented to the HK Cubs daycare to be used in their classrooms.

SAFE RUNNING COMMUNITY NOTICE

The HKHS Cross Country Team will be running a training route from Little City Road to Gunger Hill and back on the following dates:

September 27, 2018 & October 9, 2018

The high school will have staff and signs placed throughout the route to increase awareness of our student athletes. The students will be wearing highly visible neon clothing. They will be out on the road from 2:30-5:00 p.m. Please be aware of our runners if you are driving in the area on those dates. Thank you so much for your help to keep our runners safe and for your support of our Cross Country team!
