Girls Lacrosse 2024: HKHS Wins Two, Drops Two

By Janice Calvi-Ruimerman

(May 9, 2024) You win some, you lose some, but with losses come lessons! It has been a whirlwind of losses and wins over the past two weeks for the Haddam Killingworth High School Girls Lacrosse team.

On April 30, 2024, a cold, windy night in Clinton, HK took on Morgan on Morgan’s home turf. With a continuous back-and-forth possession and goal routine, HK ended the 4th quarter with a tie score 9-9. With a nail-biting draw, gain of possession, and shot on goal from attack player Aly Campbell, HK won 10-9.

Continuing this winning streak, HK gave no Mercy on Friday May 3, 2024, with an 11-8 final score on the board. HK dominated possession and Gabby Williams closed the box.

Then the tide turned a tad with back-to-back losses to Morgan and Old Saybrook on HK’s home field. Despite the battle for possession and ball control, the HK Girls were left with a 5-3 loss against Morgan on May 6th and a 14-13 loss against Old Saybrook on May 7th.

The HK-Old Saybrook game was as tight as they come with goals in the first quarter by Ava Ramino, Aly Campbell and SeaSea Ruimerman giving HK a 3-1 lead in the 1st and 9-7 at the half.

Interceptions by Maddy Catalano, Brigitte Battistoni and Jaimey DiNapoli kept the ball on HK’s side. The defense was tested, but speed and agility gave HK possession and field dominance in the second half of the game. With three minutes left on the clock, Old Saybrook intercepted the ball and gained the lead 14-13 over HK as they ran out the clock.

Both games were well matched, and HK created some dominant plays, draw possession, and surprise interceptions. Old Saybrook game goals: Aly Campbell (1) Sammy Ruimerman (3) Ava Ramino (5) SeaSea Ruimerman (4). Possession, fielding groundballs and turnover prevention were lessons learned.

Great game, Lady Cougars. Remember: possession and ball control are key!
