From food and clothing, to fuel and property tax, we have all seen increases across the board. Our seniors with fixed incomes are especially feeling it. With my mom living where three generations of my family have lived, I know this all too well. I also know, being a member of the fourth generation to live in Killingworth, that I too will be in the same boat someday.
Every generation here in Connecticut has had the older generation pay for their education through taxes since 1854. When I was in grade school, my parents’ generation paid for me and my siblings. When my parents were in school, my grandparents’ generation paid for my father and his six brothers and sisters, and my great-grandparents did the same for my grandfather and his siblings. Without each generation helping the younger one, our lives would not be where we are today. My
parents weren’t wealthy, my grandparents and great grandparents weren’t wealthy, and I certainly am not wealthy. From the one-room schoolhouses to our current schools, each generation has benefitted and we all continue to do better and better.
This coming Wednesday, I ask you to think about how you got to where you are today. If you didn’t have the education you received in grade school and high school, would your life now be the same? Our world and our country continue to evolve. Education is changing and is more important than ever. Even for our kids going into a trade, the education they receive is crucial to succeeding; not to mention AI and technology and cyber security. The need for nurses, doctors, engineers and teachers ALL need a good base education to begin their journey too.
When you go to the ballot box, think about what the generation before you did that helped you get to where you are. Your contribution makes our communities better, our states better and our country better. Please help ensure this generation has a chance by voting yes.
