(May 8, 2025) — National Prevention Week, taking place May 11, 2025 through May 17, 2025 is a nationally recognized observance dedicated to increasing public awareness and engagement around the importance of substance misuse prevention and the promotion of positive mental health. This year, the Haddam-Killingworth Community Coalition is proud to join this national effort by hosting a full week of education, youth leadership, and community connection.
Prevention isn’t just about saying “No” to substances. It’s about creating environments where young people can thrive. That includes providing them with the tools, support, and opportunities to make healthy choices, build strong relationships, and feel valued by their community. Throughout the week, Haddam-Killingworth Youth and Family Services will be posting facts, tips, and local data on social media, giving community members of all ages the knowledge they need to understand the risks, have important conversations, and take proactive steps to foster wellness in their homes and neighborhoods.
A cornerstone of prevention in Haddam and Killingworth is the leadership of our youth coalitions: Ignite, the high school youth coalition, and SPARK, the middle school junior youth coalition. These groups are made up of students who are passionate about making a difference. Throughout the school year—and especially during National Prevention Week—they take the lead in engaging their peers on topics like substance use, mental health, peer pressure, and the importance of kindness and inclusion.
By hosting events, creating peer-led campaigns, and facilitating open discussions, these youth coalitions are helping to reduce stigma, promote healthy behaviors, and empower their classmates to support one another. Their work reminds us that youth are not just the future—they’re the present leaders in prevention.
Each day during National Prevention Week, HKYFS will be sharing crucial information and facts that every family should know. Topics include the impact of underage drinking, the rise in vaping among youth, the effects of cannabis on the developing brain, and the power of parent-child communication. These posts will be available on HKYFS’s social media platforms, with content tailored for both youth and adults.
“Knowledge is one of the strongest prevention tools we have,” says Kyana Anderson, Prevention Coordinator for HKYFS. “When we equip youth, parents, and community members with accurate information, we create a network of informed advocates who can help make healthier choices easier and more accessible for everyone.”
On Friday, May 16, 2025 the Coalition will host a Family Movie Night at Parmelee Farm—a free, family-friendly evening open to the entire community. Families are encouraged to bring chairs, blankets, and snacks, and enjoy a movie under the stars. This event is more than entertainment—it’s a celebration of the protective power of family connection. Research shows that youth who feel close to their families and have regular opportunities to connect are less likely to engage in risky behaviors. This event promotes quality time, conversation, and a shared sense of belonging—fundamentals that lie at the heart of prevention.
The work of prevention continues beyond National Prevention Week. The HK Community Coalition will hold its next meeting on May 26, 2025 at 12:00 Noon, and all community members are welcome to attend. The Coalition brings together youth, parents, schools, law enforcement, healthcare providers, faith leaders, local government, and more to coordinate efforts that keep the community safe, informed, and engaged.
Whether you’re a concerned parent, an educator, or simply someone who wants to give back, your voice matters. To get involved, contact Kyana Anderson, Prevention Coordinator, at 860-345-7498 or Preventioncoordinator@hkyfs.org
National Prevention Week is a time to reflect, educate, and act. But most importantly, it’s a reminder that prevention is possible—and it starts with all of us. Through the leadership of our youth coalitions, the commitment of our families, and the support of our community partners, Haddam and Killingworth are building a culture where every young person feels seen, supported, and inspired to make healthy choices.
Stay connected, follow along on social media all week, and join us in making prevention a community tradition.
