SMC: Swimming & Diving Defeats Norwich Before Falling to Saint Rose

The Saint Michael’s College men’s and women’s swimming & diving teams split their two meets last week with road wins against Norwich University on Thursday and losses in the home finale against The College of Saint Rose on Friday. Against Norwich, the men delivered a 161-124 victory, defeating the Cadets for the first time since Jan. 26, 2010, and for the first time on the road since Nov. 18, 2009. The women captured a 148-114 decision for their 32nd straight series win over Norwich. On Friday, the men suffered a 129-86 setback, while the women were defeated 108-88. The men’s team is now 3-4, while the women sit at 3-5.

For the men against Norwich, junior Connor Hopkins (Windham, N.H./Windham) tallied four victories, winning the 50-yard (25.29) and 100-yard (55.05) backstroke races, while leading off the top 200-yard medley relay (1:42.89) and anchoring the top 200-yard freesyle relay (1:31.75). Hopkins was joined by seniors Seamus Butler (Waltham, Mass./Waltham) and Pat Thornton (Lawrenceville, N.J./Lawrence) and sophomore Payton Stewart (Keene, N.H./Keene) in the 200 medley relay, while Butler, junior Aidan Mulderrig (Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side) and first-year William Sullivan (Arlington, Va./Bishop O’Connell) rounded out the 200 free relay squad. Butler finished second in the 50-yard breaststroke, while Stewart triumphed in the 50 free (23.00) and 50-yard butterfly (24.87) races. Sullivan claimed second in the 50 free, while Mulderrig grabbed runner-up in the 100 fly and 200-yard individual medley. First-year Nate Imbergamo (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand) won the 500 free (5:08.34) and 1,000 free (10:39.77), while classmate Sean McGurn (Braintree, Mass./Braintree) took second in the latter and won the 100 breast (1:03.48). Sophomore Dan Fortier (Sandwich, Mass./Sandwich) landed second in the 50 fly, while senior Tim Kinville (Colchester, Vt./Missisquoi Valley Union) finished first in both one-meter diving competitions (111.10, 167.40).

Senior Patty Kohn (Weston, Conn./Greenwich) and junior Sarah White (Lakeville, Mass./Apponequet Regional) led the women with four wins apiece. Kohn took individual victories in the 100 back (1:02.96) and 1,000 free (11:34.38) while taking part in the winning 200 free relay (1:49.08) and 200 medley relay (1:58.10). White and senior Tess Grimaldi (Higganum, Conn./Haddam-Killingworth) both joined Kohn on the winning relay teams, while senior Elizabeth Doherty (Dedham, Mass./Dedham) rounded out the 200 free relay team and junior Lauren Giampietro (Watertown, Conn./Watertown) the 200 medley relay team. White captured wins in the 50 back (29.66) and 50 fly (28.57), while Grimaldi topped the 50 free (26.68) and finished second in the 50 fly. Giampietro snagged the 50 breast (33.50) and the 100 breast (1:12.51), while finishing as the runner-up in the 200 IM. Doherty won the 200 free (2:20.36) and was second in the 100 free, while sophomore Meg Geschwind (Rochester, Minn./Mayo) took home the 100 free (1:09.96). Junior Megan Reid (Winchester, Mass./Winchester) posted a second-place finish during the 500 free, while siding with Geschwind, senior Meg Flanagan (Middletown, R.I./The Prout School/Boston College), and sophomore Leah Benoit (Franklin, Mass./Franklin) to finish third in the 200 free relay. The win was the first of Reid’s career.

For the men against Saint Rose, Kinville took home both one-meter diving competitions (159.30, 117.30), extending his career high to seven victories this season. Mulderrig finished first in the 200 fly (2:12.47), while Fortier finished second. Hopkins took the 200 back (2:02.28), was second in the 50 free, and joined Mulderrig, Stewart, and Sullivan on the second-place 400 free relay team. Fortier, Imbergamo, McGurn, and Mulderrig partnered to finish second in the 400 medley relay. McGurn grabbed second-place finishes in the 200 breast and 500 free, while Stewart took second in the 100 free. Imbergamo finished just 0.86 seconds behind the winner in the 1,000 free, finishing in second.

For the women, Kohn totaled another three wins, emerging victorious in the 200 free (2:03.49) and 500 free (5:31.05), while pairing with Giampietro, Grimaldi, and White to win the 400 free relay (3:56.24). The three wins push her career total to 92. Giampietro took second in the 200 breast and 200 fly, while Grimaldi finished second in both the 50 free and 100 free. Benoit, Doherty, Reid, and White teamed up to win the 400 medley relay (4:45.44), while first-year Maggie King (Clinton, Conn./Mercy) won the lone one-meter diving competition (111.80). Geschwind captured second during the 1,000 free.
