LIFE STAR Crew Visits Members of HVFC

By Olivia Drake, HVFC Information Officer

(May 11, 2023)—A crew from LIFE STAR, a critical care helicopter service operated through Hartford HealthCare, visited Haddam Volunteer Fire Company on May 8, 2023. LIFE STAR responds to more than 1,000 emergencies annually and provides air transport for patients requiring immediate care at a medical facility.

After landing at HVFC’s Station No. 1, Jarad Goldberg, a flight nurse; Casey Malan, a flight respiratory therapist; and pilot Mike Kwas—who also serves as a volunteer firefighter with Haddam Neck Volunteer Fire Department—delivered a presentation and fielded questions. Afterward, the LIFE STAR crew allowed HVFC members to visit the helicopter itself and learn more about its capabilities.

“LIFE STAR’s service is renowned for its swift response and life-saving capabilities, and learning from professionals who operate in such a high-stakes environment was an exceptional opportunity for our firefighters and emergency responders,” said HVFC Deputy Chief Jed Morrissey. “This hands-on experience will undoubtedly enhance our preparedness and efficiency in responding to emergencies that require air transport for patients.”

Haddam Volunteer Fire Company, which requested LIFE STAR following a motor vehicle accident on May 6, commends the LIFE STAR crew for their unwavering dedication to saving lives.

“We look forward to continuing our partnership with LIFE STAR and working together to serve and protect our communities,” Morrissey said.
