In response to Mike Karam’s Letter to the Editor of October 24, 2023, “Importance of Effective Planning and Zoning”:

I thank you for your work and time to make Higganum pretty and I applaud your desire to want to volunteer to be a part of the Planning and Zoning Commission. Planning and Zoning must follow the laws imposed by the state statutes and follow the guidelines of our POCD.

We have a Town Planner, a POCD, and an implementation committee. Haddam has the HIGHEST tax rate around, yet you asked for and received $500 (tax dollars) from EDC (for which you’re a commissioner) to clean up personal, commercial, town and state properties…without considering the liability issues facing business owners, the town and state.

Next, you submitted a written complaint about political signs being placed on state property, when, in point of fact, you hadn’t done your due diligence by identifying the legal owners. I haven’t seen you at any Planning and Zoning meetings. I will be voting for those who, I believe, have experience in business and development, for those who are better suited for the position, and for those who are running on a positive platform rather than one of belittlement, risk, and complaints.

Lori Maggi, Haddam
