Letter to the Editor: Ban Bikes on the Boardwalk at Hammonasset

After much consideration and several years of personal observation, I propose that bicycles no longer be allowed on the path at Hammonasset Beach State Park or, at the very least, curtailed.

Possibly the state could expand the pathway to safely accommodate bicycles or have them ride on the street. I’ve heard countless walkers complain of close calls with dangerously speeding bike riders, and have witnessed more than a few near-accidents. There are often seniors,
moms, dads, and kids who, with little notice, must stop their motion and move further to one side.

Many bike riders give little or no warning. Sometimes they might utter, usually when they’re almost directly upon a person, a barely audible “On your left!” The boardwalk, which is supposed to be “bike-free,” has had teens carelessly riding bikes, speeding along, performing
“wheelies,” and the like on numerous occasions. Check out the many tire skid marks on the boardwalk.

This excellent path was paved several years ago because the sand was tough for both walkers and bike riders, but especially bike riders. Now, bike riders can speed along with
little hesitation, and trust me, they do. The best park in Connecticut can be even better and safer. Thanks.
