By Olivia Drake, HVFC Information Officer.

(December 2, 2022)—Haddam Volunteer Fire Company, along with several mutual aid companies, responded to a structure fire at 7:05 p.m. Dec. 1 at a single-family residence on Saybrook Road in Higganum. Crews were able to quickly contain the fire to the home and prevent it from spreading to the Village Court complex next door. The home, which was built in 1880, has extensive damage from heat and smoke.

The homeowners, along with three dogs, were able to safely evacuate their home before fire personnel arrived. One firefighter was injured during the incident and was transferred and treated at Middlesex Hospital. He has since been released.

Firefighters from Middletown South District, Haddam Neck, Chester, Killingworth, and Durham assisted Haddam with extinguishing the fire and extensive overhaul.

The cause of the fire is under investigation with the Haddam Fire Marshal’s Office and the Connecticut State Fire Marshal’s Office.
