HVFC Participates in Multiple Training Exercises

(August 1, 2023)—Members of Haddam Volunteer Fire Company participated in multiple training activities during the month of July.

On July 10, members practiced using ropes and a litter to rescue a patient down an embankment; on July 17, firefighters refreshed their skills on using a portable gas meter to detect traces of carbon monoxide in a confined space; and on July 24, members worked in small groups to review rapid intervention team (RIT) operations and practiced locating a downed firefighter and rescuing him or her from a building. Activities concluded tonight, July 31, with “truck checks” where members thoroughly go through each apparatus and check for any missing equipment and make sure the vehicles are safe and operable.

This month’s drills were led by Captains Josh Meyer, Kyle Everett, and Jeff Doskos.

“As firefighters we do so much more than put water on burning buildings,” Everett said. “Our primary purpose is to rescue people from dangerous situations, and the drills this month focused on just that.”

In addition to the training sessions, HVFC members responded to a total of 71 calls—including a motor vehicle accident tonight—for emergency services during the month of July.
