Girls Lacrosse 2023: HKHS Wins Opener 17-4 Over Cromwell

Submitted by Janice Calvi-Ruimerman

(April 14, 2023) — April 6, 2023, the first game of the official season, the Cougars pummeled the Cromwell Panthers with a 17-4 win by the Haddam Killingworth Girls Lacrosse Varsity team, followed by a 12-2 victory for the Junior Varsity team.

The Cougars came to Cromwell on the attack from first draw to last as the Ramino sisters continuously gained possession of the ball.  The flawless passes by the Midfield line helped the Cougars team overpower the Panthers at every turn.  To the Panthers’ dismay Senior Captains Georgia Cancroft, Audrey Wrinn and Sophie Ramino, Juniors Aly Campbell, and Samantha (Sammy) Ruimerman, and Sophmore Ava Ramino scored two goals each; five more goals by Sophomore Seanna (SeaSea) Ruimerman gave the Panthers something to talk about.

The claws were out as HKHS defenders, Senior Julianna Gagliardi (J-Gag) and Juniors Peyton Tyler, Te’a Norman and Brigitte Battistoni, kept the Panthers at bay, while Senior Captain Jenna Whitmir and Junior Jamie DiNapoli provided the assists needed to keep the ball on goal side for most of this game.  And, finally, Sophomore Varsity Goalie Gabrielle (Gabby) Williams ensured that these Panthers gained no ground, holding them to four goals.

The Junior Varsity (JV) team was not going to give Cromwell’s Junior Panthers any room to play.  The Cougars new JV Goalie, Freshman Chloe Engler, held the net, giving up only two goals to the Cougars 12. The dozen-goal win was shared by Senior Brooklyn Bailey with three  goals, Sophomore Madaline (Maddie) Catalano with two goals, Freshman players Dina Killroy – three goals, Chloe O’Bama – three goals, and Peyton MacDonald – one goal.   Midfielders Julia Berminham and Ellie Firth, along with Attack players Sydney Wrinn and Ella Connelly, kept the ball moving down the field.  Defenders Seniors Julia Favalora and Kelsie Piela along with Sophomore Sonya Luneau made certain that Cromwell remained empty at the buzzer.

Great game Lady Cougars. Way to keep those sticks up!
