Haddam Garden Club Hard at Work

Submitted by Debbie Karpf

(April 22, 2024) — This winter the Haddam Garden Club has been busy providing programs of community interest at the firehouse in Higganum.  Many residents enjoyed author Neal Sanders “Gardening is Murder,” educator John Root amazing us with “Magical and Mysterious Crop Circles,” author and illustrator John Himmelman teaching us about the beauty and benefit of “Discovering Moths,” and most recently, Robert Thorson’s fascinating history of and the  binding threads of “Stone Walls.”

With months of rain and the beginning of warmer days, the Haddam Garden Club is now hard at work in the community gardens.  We maintain all seven of the “Welcome to Haddam” signs, the Higganum Green, Haddam Green, Town Hall entrances, Transfer Station, and Brainerd Memorial Library front garden and Butterfly Garden.  This year HGC has worked with a Master Gardener intern to place signs that identify pollinator-friendly specimens and the critters attracted to them, all just outside the window of the Children’s Library on the lower level.

Garden maintenance is a year-round job, but the lead-up to our Civic Work Day, Wednesday, May 8, 2024, is the busiest time.  Weeding, edging, mulching and planting these various locations is hard work for our merry band of gardeners.  If you see us with our “tails” in the air, please feel free to stop and help.

Our major fundraiser is our Plant Sale happening this year on Saturday, May 11, 2024 from 9:00 a.m. to Noon in the parking lot of the former Haddam Elementary School in Higganum.  We will be offering a wide variety of perennials, house plants and seedlings as well as many gifts for Mom.  Shop with us and support the Haddam Garden Club.
