(Nov. 10, 2021) — Gallery 154 ~ Haddam Fine Art is Higganum’s newest private venture. Located at 350 Saybrook Road near Higganum Center – two doors from the church and directly across from High Street – the gallery is in a private home owned by Suzy Mongeon.
Suzy bought the house from the Townsend family in early 2016. A long-time resident of Durham, she is now completely enamored of her new environs. “I can drive to Higganum Market before my seatbelt reminder starts beeping!” she says. “Of course, I could also walk, and do occasionally. But my dogs don’t understand why I would walk somewhere without them.” Walking her dogs at Haddam Meadows is what started this project. There she became “dog-walk buddies” with local artist Joseph Cibula. “He had mentioned that he’s an artist, but I didn’t think much about it until the day he pulled a very large painting of a whale out of the trunk of his car. It was stunning.” She has since met other artists at the Meadows and hopes to show some of their work, along with that of other local artists.
Gallery 154 occupies one room of the residence. “I don’t have a lot of space, so I’ll have to be rather particular about what I decide to display.” The gallery was originally scheduled to open in March of 2020, but pandemic restrictions made that plan untenable. With the current supply chain problems, holiday shoppers may find that this local shopping opportunity is arriving just in time.
Hours will vary, so look for the “Open” sign or contact Suzy for an appointment. In addition to original paintings, the gallery offers prints, high-end crafts, and objets d’art. Inquiries and submissions: email gallery154haddam@gmail.com.
