An Introduction to Sustainable Trail Design

Submitted by Gail Reynolds.

The Haddam Land Trust, Inc (HLT) and the Connecticut Forest and Park Association (CFPA), cordially invite you to an interactive site walk and talk, introducing the concept of sustainable trail design on Saturday, Nov. 2, 2019 (rain date: Sunday, Nov. 3, 2019) from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. This event is targeted to those with little or no experience designing trails but is open to everyone- there is always something new to learn!
The walk and talk will begin with an overview of the basics of sustainable trail design such as land ownership, users, control points and grades, to name a few. We’ll also briefly touch on the history of trails in the Northeast and why trails fail.
We’ll then walk along a completed trail, partially completed trail and planned (bushwhacking) trail, discussing the ins and outs of what was done or is being planned. Dependent on turnout and time, we may run a “flagging” exercise.
Finally, we’ll review and relax with a weenie roast and social at the home of HLT’s president, so bring your favorite adult beverage.
Participants should be ready for a day in the November woods with some standing about and 3 to 4 miles of hiking. Bring water, snacks and an appetite for learning!
Beaver Ledges

The event will be held on the HLT’s beautiful 136-acre Beaver Ledges property. Beaver Ledges is accessible from Ruth Hill Road in Haddam. Participants should park in the area of the RT 82 overpass on and continue on foot a ¼ mile further on Ruth Hill Road to the sign for Beaver Ledges. See more about Beaver Ledges here: http://www.beaverledges.org

CT Route 9 to exit 7 (RT 82 East). At the stoplight, turn right onto RT 154 south.
Take first right onto Dudley Clark Rd. At the stop sign, turn right onto Old Chester Rd.
Follow the road (Old Chester becomes Ruth Hill) 1 ½ miles to the overpass.
Note: GPS is likely to get you lost!
Due to the nature of this event, it will be limited to the first 20 sign-ups. Please RSVP to president@hltrust.org by Monday, October 28, 2019.
