(September 4, 2026) — The public is invited to attend a special presentation, “Unearthing the Past,” by Connecticut State Archaeologist Sarah Sportman on Sunday, September 13, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. at the Haddam Volunteer Fire House, 439 Saybrook Road in Higganum.
During the presentation, Sportman will discuss the two archaeological excavations conducted during the summer of 2026 at the historic Old Burial Yard of Thirty Mile Island in Haddam. Working with a team of volunteers, she led investigations aimed at learning more about the site’s history and preserving its archaeological record.
The program will provide an inside look at the planning, field methods, discoveries, and historical significance of the excavations. Attendees will gain a deeper understanding of how archaeologists investigate historic burial grounds and what these efforts can reveal about Connecticut’s past.
The talk will include photographs and discussion of the fieldwork conducted over the summer, as well as insights into the collaborative efforts of volunteer participants who assisted with the project. The presentation is open to the public and will be of interest to local historians, genealogy enthusiasts, archaeology fans, preservation advocates, and anyone interested in Haddam’s rich history.
