What’s next?

Election night, as a Republican candidate, was obviously very disappointing. Connecticut, along with the whole country, sent a message rebuking the current administration and impressively handed Republicans L’s across the board, including myself. When we look at our political history, waves of political change are common. Both parties have lost dozens of seats when their president is unpopular. For Connecticut, change isn’t so abrupt. Connecticut has been controlled by the Democrats for a long time. That is nothing new. Midterms usually don’t change the state substantially, but come January, Connecticut will be more imbalanced than it ever has been.

I have preached balance during my whole campaign. With the Democratic majority the past two years, the legislature hasn’t actually needed a Republican to make or change laws. Being bi-partisan is just a talking point, not actual reality. Now several days out from Election Day, I’m accepting that the conservative movement has a worse leadership problem than I originally thought. I said during my campaign that I would take ownership of my actions and the actions of my party. I’m writing today to take responsibility.

As a first-time candidate, I relied on those in Hartford to help me refine my message and connect with what voters care about most. Potential voters repeatedly brought up how the president was driving them away from voting red. The Republicans’ message from the top down was to keep it to local issues above all else and not to get sucked into national politics. I agreed with that message. I truly believed that local issues, that is, affordability, government control, etc. were the only real concerns of the electorate. Local Republican groups felt the same way. Unfortunately, a lot of voters felt unheard, so they screamed it at the polls. Message received.

I’m not sure what’s to come going forward. The one thing I know is that the conservative voice is still needed in this state. Connecticut has a lot of issues and they won’t be solved by spending more money and making more rules. I’m hoping a new brand of young conservatives come out of the ashes; a conservative movement with more self-awareness and more confidence, but also a little empathy. Above all else, we need real accountability.
