At The Congregational Church in Killingworth, United Church of Christ (UCC), that spirit of connection is at the heart of a growing effort to bring people together, support local residents, and create a welcoming gathering place for the entire community.

While Sunday worship remains an important part of church life, the congregation is also embracing a broader role in Killingworth — opening its doors throughout the week as a place where people of all ages and backgrounds can find friendship, encouragement, and opportunities to make a difference.

Monday Morning Coffee: A Cup of Coffee and a Little Community

Every Monday at 10:00 a.m., the church invites the community to stop by for Monday Morning Coffee — a relaxed, welcoming gathering where the coffee is warm, the conversation is easy, and everyone has a seat at the table. In collaboration with the Killingworth Women’s Organization (KWO) Senior Connections Committee, the gathering offers an opportunity for residents, particularly seniors, to get out of the house, meet new friends, reconnect with neighbors, and enjoy a little company.

There is no agenda and no expectation. Just an open door, a friendly face, and the simple pleasure of being together. In a time when loneliness and social isolation affect so many, opportunities like these remind us that meaningful connections often begin with the smallest gestures.

Finding Calm: Yoga for Anxiety on Tuesday Mornings

Recognizing that caring for the community also means supporting emotional and physical well-being, the church offers Yoga for Anxiety, now held every Tuesday at 9:00 a.m. Led by Cynthia Sarris, the program provides a supportive environment to explore movement, breathing, and relaxation techniques that can help participants manage stress and anxiety. A suggested donation of $25 is requested. Registration is available at www.talktherapyandyoga.com The program is another example of how the church is making space for wellness, personal growth, and the everyday needs of the community.

October 24: Neighbors Helping Neighbors at Beechwood

On Saturday, October 24, 2026, beginning at 10:00 a.m., the spirit of community service will move beyond the church walls and into the Beechwood–Sun Communities neighborhood. The Congregational Church in Killingworth is joining forces with Joe Lenart of Saint Lawrence Church, Mercedes Ricciuti, the Killingworth Municipal Agent, Jackie Vece of the Beechwood community, and town partners to organize a morning of hands-on assistance for seniors living in the Beechwood community.

Volunteers will gather for several hours to rake leaves, help with small repairs, and tackle everyday outdoor tasks that can become challenging for older residents. The effort is about more than yard work. It’s about showing our older neighbors that they are valued, remembered, and supported. Volunteers are encouraged to bring a nonperishable food item or a bag of Halloween candy as an additional way to share kindness and support community needs. Whether someone can spare an hour or an entire morning, every helping hand makes a difference.

November 5: A Harvest Dinner That Feeds More Than Those at the Table

The season of giving continues with a special Harvest Dinner at the church on November 5, 2026 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., featuring a full traditional Thanksgiving dinner prepared by Café Laurel. But this gathering is about more than enjoying a delicious holiday meal. The church is inviting residents to purchase a dinner for themselves and, if they are able, purchase an additional meal for someone in need. Through this pay-it-forward effort, the church will provide dinner tickets to the local Food Pantry for distribution to individuals and families who could use a little extra support this season. It’s a simple but meaningful idea: when you make room at your table for someone else, the entire community becomes stronger.

Tickets may be purchased in advance at:

The hope is that this Harvest Dinner will not only bring neighbors together around a shared meal but also extend the warmth and generosity of the season to those who might otherwise go without.

A Church with Open Doors and a Heart for Community

These programs and events reflect a larger vision taking shape at The Congregational Church in Killingworth — one that sees the church not only as a place to gather for worship, but as a community resource, a meeting place, and a hub for neighbors helping neighbors. From a Monday morning cup of coffee to a Tuesday yoga class, from raking leaves for seniors to sharing a Thanksgiving dinner with someone in need, the message is the same: community is something we create together. And everyone has something to contribute. The church welcomes residents throughout Killingworth and surrounding towns to participate, volunteer, share ideas, or simply stop in and say hello.

You don’t have to be a member of the church to be part of its community. You just have to be a neighbor.
