(May 20, 2026) — The Regional School District 17 Board of Education is seeking community feedback regarding a proposal to officially name the Haddam-Killingworth High School baseball field “Mark Brookes Field” in honor of longtime coach and educator Mark Brookes.
Coach Brookes founded the HKHS baseball program in 1976 and has served as its only head coach for nearly fifty years. During his extraordinary career, he has achieved 789 wins and counting, led the Cougars to forty-five consecutive state tournament appearances, and guided the program to its first state championship in 2023.
In addition to his success on the field, Coach Brookes has had a lasting impact on generations of student-athletes and the broader Haddam-Killingworth community through his dedication, mentorship, and leadership. He also played a major role in developing the baseball facilities over the years, including the dugouts, press box, and concession stand.
In accordance with Board of Education policy regarding the naming of school grounds, community input is being requested as part of the review process. Community members are encouraged to share their thoughts by completing the following Google Form:

The RSD 17 Board of Education values community engagement and appreciates all feedback submitted as part of this important discussion. Submissions will be accepted through 11:59 PM on June 3, 2026.

There is no one more deserving than Mark Brookes to have a baseball field named after him. Knowing him personally, there is no one I know with more character and humility than Mark. He is an icon in the Haddam/Killingworth community, both on and off the field
