(March 23, 2026) — During the Haddam Volunteer Fire Company banquet, held on March 21, 2026 at the Middletown Elks Lodge, Lieutenant Kris Proto was named Top Responder and honored with the Chief’s Award for responding to 346 emergency incidents in 2025, supporting fellow firefighters, engaging in community outreach, stepping up to oversee the Junior Division program, and continually going above and beyond expectations.
“Lt. Proto is dependable, hardworking, and always willing to lend a hand—qualities that make him a respected and valued member of the company,” said HVFC Chief Sam Baber. “His leadership and dedication in this role have made a meaningful impact, helping to guide and mentor the next generation of firefighters.”
Other top responders include Firefighter Jamie Kuchyt with 311 calls; Lt. David Carey with 302 calls; Assistant Chief Jeff Doskos with 276 calls; and Deputy Chief Peter Brown with 243 calls.
Additionally, the following members received service pins in 2025: Firefighter John Shettleworth, 5 years; Lt. Mike Mancuso, Captain Greg Duval, and Captain Josh Meyer, 20 years; Chief Sam Baber, 25 years; Fire Police/Firefighter Ken Vallera, 30 years; Firefighter John Boothroyd, 45 years; and Firefighter Richard Zanelli, 50 years.
