HVFC Junior Firefighters Take Part in Training Drill

(September 18, 2026) — On September 15, 2026 Haddam Volunteer Fire Company Junior Division members Evan Estelle (photo below, left) and Jack Jarboe (photo below, right) participated in a collaborative drill at the Killingworth Volunteer Fire Company’s training building.

Every Tuesday, HVFC Juniors train alongside fellow cadets from Killingworth Volunteer Fire Co., Guilford Fire Department, Clinton Volunteer Fire Department, and Westbrook Chemical Engine Company. This multi-town teamwork builds confidence, creates lasting friendships, and prepares them for the next level.

“Bringing Juniors together from neighboring departments gives them a chance to learn, challenge themselves, and build confidence alongside firefighters their own age,” says HVFC Lt. Kris Proto, Junior Division Advisor. “They’re developing the skills and teamwork they’ll need for Fire I training, while also building relationships that can last well beyond the Junior Division. We hope these experiences inspire them to stay involved, become career or volunteer firefighters, and continue serving their communities for years to come.”

What is the HVFC Junior Division? It is open to teenagers aged 14 to 17. No experience needed. Cadets learn directly from experienced firefighters. They perform crucial support functions during emergency calls. Once a member turns 18, they can transition into regular membership! Interested in joining or know a teen who is? Email membership@haddamfire.org for more information!
