Letter to the Editor: Legislative Candidate’s Statement on Women’s Rights

As your state representative, I will always protect women’s right to choose. At the same time, I will work on solutions to challenges such as taxes, living expenses, housing, climate change, gun violence, community safety, and others.

Unlike my political opponent, I do not see women’s rights as a “distraction” from other important issues, nor do I believe it is “settled” simply because it is codified in state law. That terminology was proven demonstrably false when Roe v. Wade – settled law for 50 years – was overturned.

Dobbs v. Jackson endangers a woman’s right to abortion and essential healthcare, and it threatens to limit access to contraception and IVF treatment. It has resulted in draconian bans on abortion and restrictions on emergency care in 20 states, resulting in lethal consequences to women as evidenced by several recent deaths.

Republican candidates now find it convenient to avoid accountability on this issue. It’s not a popular position for winning elections. The slogan “people not politics” is a clear example, but they fail to realize politics is about people. Legislative action should help people, not hurt them. When my political opponent gives vague answers on her position on reproductive rights, it is disingenuous and deceptive to voters.

As your state representative, I won’t change my views on women’s rights, especially because it’s politically convenient. I pledge to protect women’s rights, support codifying that right in our state constitution, fight against a national abortion ban, protect healthcare providers from criminal penalties or civil liability, and defend partners, family, and others who counsel or support a woman seeking abortion.

Women’s healthcare is a personal matter that must be protected by state law. It is therefore important political candidates are truthful about their positions on this issue. You have my unwavering commitment to always protect women’s rights.
