Help Wanted for the Haddam Shad Museum

Submitted by Friends of the Haddam Shad Museum

(October 2, 2024) — Our unique Haddam Shad Museum is looking for help. In 2023 the museum was moved to its new location at the former Haddam Elementary School, and we are planning to reopen it to the public in the spring of 2025.  However, a number of projects need to be completed beforehand, and we are looking for volunteers and donations to help us out.

Projects include constructing a barrier-free access ramp and front porch, and organizing interior displays. In addition, we are also looking for volunteers to help with staffing the museum, publicity, and programming.

The Haddam Shad Museum is “the only museum in the United States dedicated to the preservation of shad fishing history in the Connecticut River Valley.” Founded by Dr. Joe Zaientz in 1997, the museum occupies Joe Maynard’s former Shad Shack and features a wealth of archival material and objects that tell the story of shad fishing along the Connecticut River from the time of the Wangunk Native Americans to the present.

The Haddam Historical Society is committed to ensuring that the building and museum, which has drawn visitors, scholars and fishermen from all over the world, remain a valuable asset to the town.

Please help us preserve, protect and promote this very special Haddam landmark for generations to come.
