Update from Haddam Board of Selectmen Meeting May 8th

(May 14, 2023) — The regular meeting of Haddam’s Board of Selectmen on May 8, 2023, was called to order by First Selectman Robert McGarry at 6:30 p.m. at the Old Town Hall. Selectmen Kate Anderson and Sean Moriarty were present.

First Selectman McGarry reported that Greg McKenna, owner of Nutmeg Pharmacy, has decided to bring in a developer for the Rossi property. A Town Meeting will be required to approve the selection of a developer, as well as to approve plans and conditions.

The Scovil Hoe groundbreaking event was a success. Two descendants of the Scovil family, Glenn Scovil and his son Ben, attended.

A Community Challenge Grant application for Haddam Elementary School was submitted.

Unfortunately, the Swing Bridge suffered a major failure when it closed on April 13, 2023. The Connecticut Department of Transportation and American Bridge Company are working to make repairs. On May 7, 2023, test openings for boat traffic went well.

A crosswalk has been installed at the library and Senior Center.

As for Tylerville Water, there are still three wells to abandon (two on private property and one business) and one residence to connect. First Selectman McGarry met with Connecticut Water and the town attorney to lay out a plan to finish the project.

The reconfiguration of Nason Road added 0.1 acre to Minow and 0.3 acre to Chadwick residences. Jacobson Associates, the Town’s engineering firm, is working with the town attorney to prepare Quit Claim deeds for the properties.

Finally, First Selectman McGarry attended the annual Connecticut Conference of Municipalities Emergency Management Symposium on April 25, 2023.

Selectman Anderson announced that the Farmers Market will start on June 3, 2023. The board will receive a request to purchase holiday decorations for Tylerville now that the sidewalks are complete. She also made a motion to appoint Sue Bement to the Fuel Storage Advisory Committee. The motion carried unanimously.

Selectman Moriarty made a motion to approve the 2022 Homeland Security Grant Resolution. The motion carried unanimously.

The next regular Board of Selectmen meeting is scheduled for Monday, June 12, 2023, at 6:30 p.m., at the Haddam Neck Fire Department. The meeting adjourned at 6:52 pm.
