Two-Year Update on Haddam’s Food Scrap Program

Submitted by Linda Talbott, Haddam Sustainability Committee

(December 8, 2023) — Once again, Haddam has stepped up and the food scrap collection program is continuing to grow.  This program began in December of 2021 and here are the statistics for the amount of food scrap waste that has been collected over the two years the program has been running:

12/8/2021-11/30/2022:  42,280 lbs. (21.1 Tons);

12/7/2022-11/30/2023:  53,050 lbs. (26.5 Tons)

Total: 95,330 lbs. (47.665 Tons) removed from Municipal Solid Waste!!

Thank you to all who are participating.  Remember, if you want to use a Starter Kit, which consists of a two-gallon countertop bin, a six-gallon green transport bin, a roll of twenty-five compostable Biobags to line the countertop bin, and a brochure explaining the program, they are located at the Town Office Building in the Tax Collector’s office.  The kits are a $25 donation and extra rolls of Biobags are $5 a roll. We now have thirteen of the Blue Earth Compost 32-gallon bins at the Haddam Transfer Station.

The Transfer Station is open Wednesdays and Saturdays 8:00 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. and Sundays 8:00 a.m. to 11:45 a.m.  You can visit the Transfer Station site on the town website, www.haddam.org, to view the holiday schedule.

The drop-off point for food scraps is located next to the Swap Shack. If you have a private trash hauler, there are Food Scrap-only stickers (free to residents) also available at the Tax Collector’s office.

See the report above for November, which was an awesome month for Haddam!
