St. Peter Roman Catholic Church in Higganum will begin its Diamond Jubilee Year of Celebration, beginning with a special Mass on Sunday, January 5th at 8:30 am.
Next June marks sixty years since the dedication of the present Church building on St. Peter’s Lane and Maple Avenue. Originally a mission to St. Joseph’s Church in Chester, St. Peter was incorporated and the first church was built in 1887. That church was located on Old Saybrook Road just south of Higganum Village and still stands today as a private residence. In 1958 St. Peter Higganum was declared a separate parish community to serve the people of Haddam. Two years later the new church was completed and on June 19th, 1960 was opened for service to God and to the community.
Many events are planned throughout 2020; the most important of which will be a rededication Mass offered by Bishop Michael Cote, of the Diocese of Norwich, and attendant clergy, scheduled for June 28th, 2020 at 9 a.m.
