Plastic Bag Collection Returns to Haddam Transfer Station

Submitted by Haddam Sustainability Committee

(October 1, 2023) — A new collection site has been added to the Haddam Transfer Station with the container now being used for collection of household plastic bags. It is located on the left as you drive into the dumpster area. This container is part of the program begun by the Town of Haddam several years ago to collect plastic bags and provide them to the Trex Company, which takes reclaimed plastic and turns it into eco-friendly materials that are used as an alternative to wood.

Trex has rewarded Haddam’s efforts by providing the town with four benches made of its reclaimed materials. One is located outside the Town Office Building, the other outside the Barber Shop on Route 81. The Department of Public Works will determine sites for the other two.

Accepted plastics at the Transfer Station site and at the collection box at the Town Office Building include:

  • pallet wrap
  • stretch film
  • grocery bags
  • bread bags
  • case overwrap
  • dry cleaning bags
  • newspaper sleeves
  • ice bags
  • wood pellet bags
  • Ziploc & other reclosable food storage bags
  • produce bags
  • bubble wrap and air pillows
  • salt bags
  • cereal bags                                                                                                                                                        Haddam Sustainability Committee volunteers will be transporting the bags collected at the Transfer Station to Stop & Shop in Middletown. If you would like to assist us in this effort, please email us at: haddamsustainabilitycommittee@gmail.com. You can also bring your plastic bags with you to Stop & Shop, Kohl’s or Big Y and drop them in the bins at the entrance doors. The stores work with Trex on pick-up for removal to the company’s facility in Virginia.                                                                                                                                   Photo by Linda Talbott
