Our Lives, Our Communities: Asset Building

Asset Building- Looking more closely at the External Asset of “Support”

When we look at supporting our youth, we know that all support matters — no matter how “big” or “small,” it all adds up. Many of us have memories of a kind neighbor who just always waved and said “Hello,” or the friendly person behind the deli counter that noticed us and asked how we were doing. These contacts, youth interacting with caring positive adults, does make an impact. Young people want to be noticed, and often describe feeling invisible by the adults around them. Sometimes adults are indeed wary of young people, and shy away from interaction, fearing it will go badly — or that the young person isn’t interested. The evidence shows very clearly that adults noticing, interacting, and demonstrating care and interest does make a difference in a child’s life. So, when you are out and about this week, notice the children around you. Make an effort to say “Hello,” make a positive comment, or ask how they are doing. It will make a difference!
