Obituary: Edward Coe Hemmann

Edward Coe Hemmann of Deep River, beloved husband of the late Roberta Kittredge Hemmann, passed away on Saturday, April 8, 2023 at Middlesex Hospital. Born in Hartford on September 24, 1923, he was the son of the late Carl Edward Hemmann and Clara Coe Hemmann. He grew up in Wethersfield and graduated from Wethersfield High School, Class of 1941. He proudly served our country in World War II from 1943-1946 in the United States Army 4th Amphibious Brigade, seeing duty in New Guinea, the Philippines and Japan.

Upon his honorable discharge he returned to Wethersfield and went to work for a retail credit company in Hartford, later graduating from Morse College in Hartford in 1951 and became a banker with the Phoenix State Bank in Hartford later to become C.B.T. He also worked for the City Savings Bank of Middletown, Moodus Savings Bank and Essex Savings Bank where he retired in 1985 as vice president and manager of the Old Lyme office. He was most proud of his maternal Coe lineage to Robert Coe Puritan, one of the early settlers of Wethersfield. He was a member of the Granite Lodge #119 AF & AM of Haddam and a Mason for more than sixty-five years.

Ed was a devoted fan of the UConn Huskies women’s basketball team and looked forward to watching them each season. He loved to be near the water and to watch the boating activity. With his family he vacationed at Cape Cod, Snug Harbor, Rhode Island, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island. Ed loved to play cards, mostly pinochle, with his friends. He was an active member of the Deep River Congregational Church, volunteered many years at Middlesex Hospital and at the Connecticut Tourism Welcome Center in Westbrook.

Edward is survived by his beloved daughter, Joyce Louise Bugbee, grandchildren Nathan T. Bugbee, Sarah A. Bugbee of Higganum, Riccardo Hemmann of Bologna, Italy, and great grandson Cesare Edward Hemmann. Ed was predeceased by his son Edward Coe Hemmann Jr. of Bologna, Italy, his twin brothers Stanley Ward Hemmann and Stephen Clyde Hemmann, his step-sister Jean Goin and husband William, of Clinton, and son-in-law David M. Bugbee. In addition, Ed leaves behind several nieces and nephews and many friends.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday April 22, 2023 at 10:00 a.m. at the Deep River Congregational Church, 1 Church Street in Deep River. Burial will immediately follow at the Village Cemetery in Old Wethersfield. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Deep River Congregational Church c/o the Music Director, P.O . Box 246, Deep River, CT 06417.

Services are in the care of Robinson, Wright & Weymer Funeral Home in Centerbrook.
