(August 2, 2023) — Frequent contributor Philip Devlin submitted these images of what he describes as this week’s “Super Moon.” This one was taken at Scarborough State Park Beach in Narragansett, Rhode Island by Devlin’s sister-in-law, Carol Dupuis.
“It is 14% larger and 30% brighter than usual,” says Devlin. He adds that there will be another full moon (a blue moon) at the end of August and this won’t happen again until 2037. (Hence, the expression “once in a blue moon”).
Haddam Sustainability Committee member Teresa Resnick says the August 1st moon is also described as a “sturgeon moon.” Among some Native American tribes, this moon was thought to signal the start of fishing season; among others, the start of harvesting season. Resnick says it also can serve as a reminder to us to preserve and protect nature.
