Nathaniel B. Field Memorial Foundation Donates to Volunteers in Psychotherapy

Submitted by Howie Field.

This year, the Nathaniel B. Field Memorial Foundation, Inc. doubled its annual donation to a very special nonprofit organization, Volunteers In Psychotherapy. An alternative to insurance-covered psychotherapy and public clinics, VIP preserves people’s privacy to the maximum extent Connecticut law allows. Clients “pay for” their therapy by doing independent volunteer work for a charity, nonprofit or government program. Importantly, VIP allows clients to stay in psychotherapy through VIP for as long as they find it helpful. We are fortunate to celebrate VIP’s 20th year anniversary, as we also remember and honor Nathan on his 21st birthday.

Over the past 20 years, VIP has provided over 7,700 free therapy sessions with licensed clinicians in exchange for 31,000 hours of community volunteer work. With a 40% increase in requested services over the past year, the Foundation’s donation will help ensure that those seeking free and private therapy can have access to the help they need. For more information, please contact Dr. Richard Shulman, Director and licensed psychologist at VIP at 860-233-5115, or visit the VIP website at www.CTVIP.org.

Our mission is to prevent suicide through public awareness and education, to reduce the stigma of mental illness, and to provide hope and support.
