Submitted by State Rep. Christine Palm
(July 14, 2022) — State Representative Christine Palm (D-36th District) issued the following statement after the July 9, 2022 rally held in Higganum in support of women’s reproductive rights:
“In light of the egregious, dangerous decision by the Supreme Court to overturn Roe v.
Wade, I was extremely heartened to see more than 100 women (and men) of all ages in our community come together to support each other and to stand up for their rights.
Based on what women went through during the pre-Roe days, we already know this
decision will endanger the health and lives of Connecticut women, along with the 58
million women of child-bearing age across the country. Overturning Roe not only
emboldens extreme politicians and judges to go further in denying women the freedom to
access lifesaving healthcare, but also puts into question settled law on same-sex marriage,
access to contraception, and potentially even interracial marriage.
That’s why I was proud to work with colleagues on H.B. 5414, the Connecticut
Reproductive Rights Defense Act, which will protect abortion providers and patients here
in Connecticut as well as pregnant people coming here from other states for healthcare.
What this rally proves is that while the present may be uncertain, our young people provide
a big reason to be hopeful for our future. CLICK HERE to watch my remarks at the rally.
I’d like to thank the following fellow speakers:
• Rep. Jillian Gilchrest (D- West Hartford)
• Rep. Stephanie Thomas (D- Norwalk, Westport, Wilton)
• Rabbi Marci Bellows (Congregation Beth Shalom Rodfe Zedek)
• Jessica Puk (Board Chair, REACH Foundation)
• Claire Walsh (Head of Democracy Women in Action)
I’d also like to thank Haddam First Selectman Bob McGarry and the HDTC.”
