Killingworth Library: March 2020 Activities & Events

March 1, 2020, 3:30 – 5:30 p.m. – Sundays with the Suffragists, Part 3

Come to Killingworth Library for a viewing of the film Suffragette (rated PG-13, running time 1 hour, 46 minutes). All programs in this series are free, but space is limited. Please pre-register for this session via our online calendar at Killingworthlibrary.org or contact the library at 860-663-2000. 

March 6, 2020, 4:30 – 6:00 p.m. – “First Friday” Anime Night for Tweens at Killingworth Library

Join us the first Friday of each month to unwind and hang with your friends while watching and talking about anime. Suited for ages tween and up. Soda and pizza will be available. We will be showing episodes of “My Hero Academia” followed by a discussion of what to watch during the April session. March 8, 2020, 3:30 – 5:30 p.m. – Sundays with the Suffragists, Part 4

Come to Killingworth Library for a combination movie viewing and book discussion. The session will start with the documentary Not for Ourselves Alone, part of the American Lives Series by Ken Burns. We will then discuss Votes for Women: American Suffragists and the Battle for the Ballot, a nonfiction young adult book by Winifred Conkling. Extra copies of the book are available at the circulation desk, for advance reading. All programs in this series are free, but space is limited. March 10, 2020, 1:00 – 2:30 p.m. – Tuesday Book Club

Join us as we discuss The Source of Self-Regard: Selected Essays, Speeches and Meditation by Toni Morrison. Extra copies are available at the circulation desk. Newcomers always welcome!

March 12, 2020, 6:30 – 7:30 p.m. – “Second Thursday” Book Chat, at Killingworth Library

Not big on assigned reading? Prefer to go with your own literary flow? Join us for our Second Thursday Book Chats! Participants are invited to bring a book they’ve enjoyed to share with the group (fiction, nonfiction, print, audio… your choice!), or you can just sit in and soak up the suggestions. No obligation to speak, just a love of books required! Tea and light refreshments will be served. No registration necessary ~ just drop in.

Attendance is currently limited to six players, but if we get more interest, we will expand to include a tween group for ages 10 – 12. So please register, even if you end up on the waiting list.

March 19, 2020, 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. – Plant a Seed Day

More than ever before our food system relies on processed food, junk food, and fast food – YUCK! Come to Killingworth Library and meet the experts from Parmelee Farm’s Shared Harvest Garden and learn how access to real food can start with a single seed. Come plant a seed to take home! This cross-generational program is free, but registration is required to make sure there are enough supplies.

March 19, 2020 6:30 – 8:00 p.m. – Mystery Book Club

Join us as we discuss Robicheaux by James Lee Burke. Extra copies are available at the circulation desk. No registration required and newcomers always welcome!

March 20, 2020, 4:00 – 6:00 p.m.Wingspan

Adults and older teens are invited to learn how to play the award-winning, engine-building board game Wingspan! Held on the 3rd Friday of every month. Participants play bird enthusiasts seeking to discover and attract the best birds to their wildlife preserves. You’ll learn a lot about birds and their habitats, while having fun! Seating is limited, please make sure you have registered with the library!

Bring your kids and grandkids to discuss the young adult novelized memoir A Time For Courage: The Suffragette Diary of Kathleen Bowen, Washington, D.C. 1917 (part of the Dear America series). March 23, 2020, 3:30 – 4:30 p.m. – Tech Time with the HK Leos!

Do you want to try out the library’s new expanded collection of downloadable audio books but just aren’t sure how to do it? Join us as the tech savvy teens of the HK Leo’s stop by to assist us with answering your questions! Bring your iPhone or smart phone with you and we will step you though the process (you will also need your library card #). This program is free, but advance signup is requested.

March 25, 2020, 4:30 – 5: 30 p.m. – Readers & Eaters

Calling all 4th and 5th Graders! Discuss “Look Both Ways” by Jason Reynolds while munching on pizza; extra copies of the book are available at Killingworth Library. Space is limited, sign up online at Killingworthlibrary.org.

               Storytime at Killingworth Library – Every Saturday from 10:30 – 11:00 a.m.

For 6 months – 6 years. March’s theme is “Singing Songs and Telling Tales”. Drop in format.

 

               Love 2 Sign with Jaye: Thursdays, 10:00 – 10:30 a.m., March 5 – May 7 (10 sessions)

Sign language for children 6 months – 6 years.

 

                ABC Amigos: Thursdays, 10:45 – 11:15 a.m., March 5 – May 7 (10 sessions)

Bilingual storytime for preschool children.
