Killingworth Copes: March 27, 2020

By Cathy Iino.

Hello, Killingworth-
The number of coronavirus cases in Connecticut and in Middlesex County jumped by 28 percent on Friday. According to an NBC Connecticut news report, cases are only beginning to surge, with a peak expected around three weeks from now. At that point, Connecticut will need almost twice as many hospital beds as we now have for coronavirus patients, according to the projection. The state is working hard to prepare, setting up field hospitals and vigorously seeking medical equipment. Now is not the time to let up our guard.
Federal economic relief plan. The giant stimulus package passed today provides one-time payments to many individuals and families, expands unemployment benefits, and suspends some student loan payments until September 30. The New York Times has a clear FAQ on assistance for individuals, and I will try to provide some guidance in the next few days to make sure opportunities aren’t missed.
Go fish. Governor Lamont opened fishing season early this year, urging people to enjoy fishing as a solitary experience–to maintain social distancing and keep fishing lines from getting tangled. Remember to remain at least 6 feet from others, practice good personal hygiene, and stay home and away from others if you feel sick.
Killingworth Town Hall is closed, but you can get a fishing license on line here.
Blood shortage. Many of us who have been accustomed to donating blood are now supposed to remain isolated because of our age or other reasons. Consequently, the Red Cross is reporting a serious shortage of blood. If you are young and healthy, please consider donating. Find a nearby blood drive at redcrossblood.org, or call 800-733-2767.
Stay home, stay safe, and have a peaceful weekend–
Cathy
