What Do Haddam & Killingworth Do During COVID-19?

By Kathy Brown.

We asked readers “How are you handling this quarantine? Send us pictures of the puzzles you’ve completed, the yardwork you’ve done, garbage bags full of trash you’ve picked up on your walks, neighbors keeping their distance while “socializing” or whatever else you’ve done to stay busy!” and we got answers.

Drew’s first ciabbata

Jenn White of Higganum said, “We are using our time to catch up on chores and learn new skills. Since I knew fresh bread would be difficult to keep in stock during a quarantine, I picked up ingredients to make it from scratch at home and shared this baking skill with my son, Drew Santopietro. It’s a comfort to know he now has a skill he can draw on to feed himself, as well as others, in the future.”

Sharon’s sourdough

Sharon Challenger, of Haddam, is also baking bread: sourdough.

Some people are doing puzzles, like Elizabeth Malloy of the Haddam Historical Society.

When I’m not helping my students navigate distance learning, I am doing needlepoint.

I have seen several posts from people on the “You Live in Higganum if …” Facebook page and the “Killingworth Stompin’ Ground” Facebook page of people going for walks, and picking up trash along the way (my children and I did it last week on the Route 154 sidewalk from the Haddam Post Office to the 30 Mile Plantation Cemetery, and again this week, along Route 154. Both times we filled up a big garbage bag.

Some neighbors are still getting together, albeit from a distance. Here is a neighborhood in Killingworth “getting together” while still remaining apart!

What are you doing to stay busy in this “Stay Home, Stay Safe” time? Send us your projects, your kids’ artwork, whatever you’re doing to make it through this quarantine time at editors@haddamnews.org.
