Killingworth Copes: April 15, 2020

By Cathy Iino.

Hello, Killingworth–
Here are nice numbers for you: When I went into Town Hall on Tuesday, I found 90 hand-sewn facemasks dropped off by 7 different “sewists,” as Kate Novick likes to call them. Others in town–for example, Annette Cook and Nancy McCormick–have given away hundreds of masks to residents and to hospitals. Thank you all! What a labor of love.
And a much needed one. The state now has 14,000 laboratory-confirmed cases of COVID-19 and certainly many more cases than that overall. Please use every precaution–stay home as much as possible, wear a mask if you must go out in public, maintain at least 6 feet of distance between yourself and others, wash your hands thoroughly, and don’t touch your face. Do this to stay safe and to help others in the community stay safe.
Scam IRS calls. Along with stimulus checks come scammers. Beware! Scammers may try to get you to send money, or they may try to get personal information or account numbers in order to gain access to your money.
The Internal Revenue Service will not contact you by phone, email, mail, or in person asking for any kind of information in order for you to get your stimulus payment. The IRS will not demand payment in the form of a prepaid debit card, gift card, or wire transfer. The IRS will not threaten to bring in local police, immigration officers, or other law-enforcement to have you arrested for not paying. The IRS cannot revoke your driver’s license, business licenses, or immigration status.
If someone tries to threaten or cheat you out of your economic impact payment-that’s the official name-go to https://www.treasury.gov/tigta/ or call 800-366-4484.
Killingworth Library. The library will reopen the library drop box on April 15 so that people can begin returning library books. Please do not place more than 5 items in the drop box per visit. Remember, no fines will be charged while the library is closed!
Also starting on April 15, the library will place a cart of free books near the drop box. The books are selected from the library’s ongoing book sale. Help yourself . . . then wash your hands.
If another patron is at the book drop when you stop by, remember to keep your distance.
Until the library reopens, remember that staff are available to assist you Monday – Friday. If you need help logging into your account or accessing our online materials, please call 860-663-2000 or email mail@killingworthlibrary.org.
Everbridge alert system. Please remember to sign up for AlertKW in addition to CTAlerts. The AlertKW system will give us more flexibility and speed in getting out important messages and allow us to target emergency messages to particular parts of town. CTAlerts will give you regional and statewide messages.
You can sign up for both systems at townofkillingworth.com (but you must sign up for each of them separately.) You can also sign up for AlertKW at here or text to AlertKW to 888777. You may enter more than one phone number or email address for alerts.
Chatfield Hollow is reopened to cars. Late-breaking good news!
Stay home, stay safe–
Cathy
