ESSEX, CT – February 2022 — The Connecticut River Museum (CRM) today announced that its Executive Director, Jennifer Carlson, will leave her post to return to Pennsylvania.

Board Chair Peter Coombs said, “We are very sorry to see Jennifer leave, especially since she has done such a great job during the time she’s been at the helm.”

“The pandemic and the world events of the past couple years have caused many people to re-prioritize their lives,” said Carlson. “Right now, being more available to family and friends is very important to me and my husband.” Her last day at the Museum is March 31.

The Museum recently completed a thorough review of its operations and produced a strategic plan to guide it through the next three to five years. Just this past January, CRM took possession of the iconic Connecticut River vessel RiverQuest which, together with the re-creation of Adriaen Block’s sailing vessel Onrust, has formed a substantially expanded water-based platform for the Museum’s educational programs.

Board Chair Coombs reported that the Museum has hired Oliva White, former Executive Director of The Amistad Center for Art & Culture at the Wadsworth Atheneum, to be Interim Director. White recently worked closely with the Museum as a consulting facilitator during the Strategic Planning process. A search for a permanent Executive Director commences soon.

For nearly fifty years, the Connecticut River Museum has occupied its historic site on the bank of the Connecticut River at the foot of Main Street in Essex. Preserving three historic buildings and collection of art, artifacts, and manuscripts and maintaining an active schedule of educational programs, CRM is accredited by the American Alliance of Museums and is a member of the Council of American Maritime Museums.
