At 11:35 p.m. on May 2, 2019, HVFC responded to a motor vehicle accident on Killingworth Road in front of Station 3. A driver, heading southbound, lost control of his vehicle and struck a utility pole. This caused the pole and secondary lines to snap.
The vehicle’s operator had self extricated and fled the scene prior to units arriving. Connecticut State Police encountered the driver about 1/2 mile from the accident and Haddam Volunteer Ambulance personnel evaluated him on scene. He refused additional medical treatment.
Firefighters closed both lanes on Killingworth Road and rerouted traffic around the scene for about two hours. Once the power was secured by Eversource, the vehicle was removed from the scene. Crews from Eversource and Frontier worked throughout the night and today to repair the broken pole and lines.
